Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the vehicle has a mechanical breakdown?

Britz offers a 24-hour assistance helpline to answer any emergency breakdown calls. The client is to call the number displayed on the keytag and they will be advised what to do.

What happens when a customer has an accident?

At the Accident Scene they must:

  1. Obtain details of other Driver/s and Witnesses
  2. Do not accept blame or insist other party at fault
  3. Report the accident to police, regardless of estimated damage costs
  4. Photograph damage to all vehicle/s and registration number/s. If possible, take more than one photo showing different angles.
  5. Phone the nearest Britz branch with the accident details within 24 hours.

At the Branch:

  1. The customer must give all details contained in the "What to do if you have an accident" form to the Customer Service Representative who will complete a Motor Vehicle Accident Report.
  2. The customer must produce their Driver’s License and hand over the police report (if applicable) and any supporting photographs
  3. Customers are required to pay the accident excess (if applicable)
  4. The Customer Service Representative will ensure the Motor Vehicle Accident Report is completed clearly and accurately and signed by the customer.

Time Frame for Settlement of Customer Excess Claims:

  1. The Claims Department strives to ensure that any money due back to the client is forwarded as quickly as possible.
  2. Third Party claims can take months or even years to resolve. Britz cannot force the destiny of these claims, it is up to our Insurance Company and the Third Party, whether they be insured or not.
  3. During periods of high utilization, it is not always possible to have the cost of our vehicle damage assessed immediately, However, the Claims Department closely monitor these claims and make every endeavor to have the damage repaired as soon as possible, enabling the balance of excess to be refunded.
  4. For information regarding outstanding claims or Excess refunds please contact the Claims Department.

What is the procedure if a client wants to extend the hire or return their vehicle early?

Britz are happy to extend a booking, but it is always dependent on availability. The client should call the Reservations staff on the freecall number provided as soon as possible to organize. Failure by the client to obtain authorization will result in a daily fee of AUD 150 in addition to the daily rate.

If the hirer wishes to change the drop-off destination after the Rental has commenced, they must first obtain authorization from the destination branch. Subject to the change being approved, an additional charge of up to AUD 500 will apply.

Britz do not offer any refund on the daily rental charge if the vehicle is returned early. However Britz do offer a refund on the daily insurance charge.

Can the campervans be used to transport additional people?

The campervans are designed and licensed to carry a maximum amount of people. For example, an Explorer campervan is designed for 4 people and thus will only be fitted with four seatbelts and be licensed to carry a maximum of four.

Britz offer a large range of passenger cars and 4WDs if you require a vehicle purely for transportation.

Can passengers travel in the rear of the vehicle?

The large campervans are equipped with seatbelts in the rear of the vehicle. Passengers are allowed to travel in the back, but must be wearing seatbelts at all times when the vehicle is in motion.

Is a special drivers license required to drive the vehicles?

The campervans, 4WDs and cars do not require a special vehicle license. The branch staff will need to be shown a valid drivers license from your country of residence and Britz strongly recommends the driver also carry a valid International drivers license.

What is the minimum driving age?

All drivers must be a minimum of 21 years. A medical certificate stating that the customer is fit to drive the vehicle they have booked for the duration of the hire is required for drivers over the age of 75.

Do campervans have to stay in a campground overnight?

Legally in Australia you are allowed to "free camp" in some areas. However, the battery for the campervans only charges whilst driving or plugged in to a 240v power supply / campground. If a vehicle is free camping (that is, not plugged in at a 240v power supply) this battery will run low, hence we strongly recommend that the client stay in one of the many well-maintained campgrounds around Australia. This will give them access to additional facilities such as TV rooms and laundry facilities and also allows them to recharge the domestic battery on some vehicles. All Britz customers receive a 10% discount at all Big 4 Holiday Parks. Clients are supplied with a complementary guidebook for all of these campground operators.

*Please note: Some of the Bushcampers are not designed to be plugged in at a 240v campground, so clients must ensure the battery is kept charged whenever possible.

Where can the vehicles travel?

The vehicles can be driven interstate and also taken to both Tasmania and on all roads on Kangaroo Island (SA). Britz does require the customer to seek permission from the branch staff when they arrive to travel on some 4WD roads. Britz also do not allow travel on some 4WD tracks as listed in Rental Terms and Conditions.
