Northern Great Barrier Reef Cruise

Cooktown

The Queen of the North, as it is often called, lies on the banks of the Endeavor River, close to where Captain James Cook careened his ship for repairs in 1770. Cooktown nowadays is a well established Northern Queensland town with a pervading sense of history.

With the discovery of gold on the Palmer River in 1873, Cooktown was founded and within a year had grown to a town of 15,000 people. By the turn of the century the population was over 35,000 people. In 1949 Cooktown suffered a major setback when it was devastated by a cyclone. Cooktown, however, refused to die and in the 1950s the first tourists began to arrive.

The James Cook Historical Museum should not be missed. It portrays much of the life and times of the early days and has some award-winning displays. The Lighthouse on Grassy Hill, named by Cook but no longer grassy, gives a good view of the surrounding area.

Lizard Island

Lizard Island is Australia's northern most island resort, located 240 kilometers north of Cairns and 27 kilometers off the coast of North Queensland. It is a National Park covering 1,013 hectares with 24 sandy beaches and a lagoon.

During his epic voyage of 1770, Captain James Cook climbed the peak on Lizard Island to chart a course out to sea through the maze of reefs which confronted him. Today Lizard Island offers an escape of a different kind.

Here you can snorkel off a secluded beach to discover a garden of giant clams, many a meter long and some reputed to be over 120 years old. And there are 23 more soft, powdery white beaches just waiting to be explored.

Lizard Island is renowned for its diving. At the world famous Cod Hole, you'll come face to face with a massive yet curious Potato Cod swimming right up to inspect you with child-like curiosity.
