On the Road with Maui

Safe on the road with Maui

You can drive all the way around Australia on Highway 1 or through the middle from Adelaide to Darwin on the "bitumen" - and round and about on very well maintained roads. This system of all weather roads and highways will take you to all of the major tourist attractions - but not very far off the beaten track you may find yourself on dirt roads. If you're traveling in excess of 100km from the nearest sealed road and on some of the rougher tracks you'll have to book a BRITZ 4WD vehicle.

Most of all, travelers are unaware of the sheer distances from one destination to the next on this huge continent. Check with us for the time required to travel to the places of your choice. You should not plan on driving more than 300 kilometers a day, and fill up on petrol before it gets too low, as distances between petrol stations in more remote areas can be considerable. Despite common sense warnings, caution, and preparation - there is nothing to fear if you have good common sense and Maui back up service. Here's a few tips:

  • Keep up to date maps handy.
  • Monitor weather and road conditions - particularly in the wet seasons in Australia's North (November to March) where Outback roads can be closed for weeks.
  • On outback roads, particularly at night, cattle, sheep and kangaroos are common hazards.
  • Cattle grids should be approached slowly with care.
  • Slow down for oncoming huge road trains (trucks) and give them plenty of room.
  • Avoid driver fatigue. Take regular two hour breaks and avoid driving more than 5 hours a day.
  • Never exceed 60 km/h on unsealed or gravel roads.
  • If you plan to travel through Aboriginal Land, you must obtain a permit early. Maui can supply you with the addresses of the relevant authorities.

Climate

Australian seasons are the opposite of those in Europe and North America. It's hot in December, and midwinter in July and August. The climactic extremes aren't too severe in most parts - but the center is a typical desert climate. Hot during the day and cold at night. In the far north you enter the monsoon belt - where its either hot and wet or hot and dry.
