Cape Town to George
The Scenic Beauty of The Garden Route

The trip to George takes a winding route through the winelands and mountains, before reaching the town of Worcester. At Ashton passengers disembark for a wine-tasting at one of South Africa's famous wine estates.

Travelling towards the coast the train will pass through Swellendam, South Africa's third oldest town.

Leaving the coast behind the train passes near Mossel Bay, where the Portuguese navigator, Bartholomew Dias, made his first landfall after unknowingly rounding the Cape of Good Hope in 1488.

George was founded in 1811 and named after King George III, with a fine white 1840 church and streets lined with ancient oaks.

Today George is the Garden Route's tourist center, with an excellent golf course.

From this center one can investigate the treasures of the area which include the Oudtshoorn ostrich farms, the Cango Caves, the Tsitsikama forests and other scenic attractions too numerous to list here.
